Where do you run the courses? / Do you do any other locations?
UK
The current locations for training in the UK are: Hove (near Brighton), Northampton and Stirling (Scotland).
There are no plans at present to offer trainings in London, or other locations around the UK, as these three venues put training within a couple of hours reach of the majority of the UK.
Ireland
For details of HypnoBirthing practitioner training in Ireland, please visit the HypnoBirthing Ireland website.
Other locations worldwide
For a listing of other practitioner trainings around the world (though the majority are in the USA), please visit the HypnoBirthing Institute website.
What time does the course start?
If you're doing the 4-day course (i.e. Intro to Hypnosis or Birth Basics, followed by the Practitioner Certification Workshop), each day starts at 9:00am and finishes at 5:00pm.
If you're only doing the Practitioner Certification Workshop (i.e. you're a hypnotherapist and a midwife/birth professional), then this starts at 3pm on the Friday afternoon. Please ensure when making any accommodation and travel arrangements that you are present for 3pm on Friday, and not just the Saturday and Sunday as previously.
In either case, please ensure you arrive at least 10 minutes early to allow for a prompt start.
Do I have to do all four days together?
Yes. To allow us to schedule the courses, and manage room sizes, etc. we do not currently allow splitting the course (unless you need to do the six day course).
If your reason for wanting to split the course is due to breast-feeding, we've had a number of students (certainly on the Northampton course) have their partner look after the baby and they've breast-fed during the breaks, so it's worth contacting the course instructor and discussing it with them.
What does the course cover?
Please see our Course Content page.
What if I'm not a hypnotherapist or a birth professional?
If you're not a hypnotherapist or a birth professional, you will need to do six days training in total.
The first four days you do as if you were a birth professional i.e. Introduction to Hypnosis for Childbirth, followed by the Practitioner Certification.
In addition, as well as completing the 4-day course, you'll be required to either:
- Attend the Birth Basics 2-day training separately, before or after the 4-day course (the recommended option), or
- Purchase the homestudy version of the Birthing Basics course
Please note, both options above are in addition to your initial course fee. This would currently mean a total of £945 for your training (£695 for the initial training, and then £250 for the Birth Basics).
Completing the Birth Basics is mandatory and, as a non-birth professional, you will not receive your qualification without completing the Birth Basics course.
How much does the training cost?
As a guide, current UK courses are £695 for hypnotherapists and midwives/non-hypnotherapists (this is for a four day course - please see above if you're not a hypnotherapist or a birth professional). Trainings outside the UK vary - please see the relevant course page for details.
However, the cost can vary based on the location of the course, venue costs, number of students, etc. You will be advised of the exact cost for each course when the details are finalised, and prior to you needing to book.
To be notified of details of courses as they are arranged, please register your details here.
Can I get funding for the training?
We do not offer funding directly, and cannot advise of any particular schemes. Any funding applications or sources are the responsibility of the student.
However, we have had a number of midwives who've been sponsored by their hospital, and at least one student whose local Job Centre managed to obtain funding for her.
Are there any practicals in the course?
Yes, there are practical sessions, as well as the theory. Please see our Course Content page for more information.
Is there an exam?
Although there is not a 'sit down/invigilated' exam, you will be expected to complete an assigment/assessment following the course. This is done at home, after the course has been completed.
You then submit your assessment to the HypnoBirthing Institute for marking, and provided you meet the necessary standard, you will be issued with your certification.
What materials are provided/what do I need to bring?
The only things you need to bring are a notepad and pen. We will provide all the course materials, handouts, forms, scripts, CDs and DVDs - basically everything you need.
Am I expected to be there for my clients' births?
No. The whole point of HypnoBirthing is to teach the couple the techniques for them to have a peaceful birth without needing to have you present.
Some therapists are willing to attend births if requested, but is entirely up to the individual. It is certainly not a requirement of HypnoBirthing for the practitioner to be present at the actual birth.
Over what period must I run courses for couples?
HypnoBirthing® Practitioners are required to deliver the course over 5 two and a half hour sessions or four three hour sessions unless in exceptional circumstances e.g. the couple have to travel an excessive distance to attend the course or the mother is very close to her due date and there is not time to complete the course over four or five weeks.
It is not permitted to offer or advertise HypnoBirthing courses over a weekend, or two weekends, as a matter of course.
How much do therapists charge/how much can I earn?
This is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string?' question. As explained here, therapists charge between £200 and £450, depending on location, class size, etc.
How much you can earn depends on how many clients you see, and that is determined primarily by your willingness to put in the effort to obtain them.
Yes, you will receive some referrals through the Institute but the key to building a strong and sutainable business is getting out there and finding clients yourself, and building a good reputation locally.
One final point though. We have found that our most successful HypnoBirthing practitioners are those with a deep and personal interest in childbirth, and in empowering women to have a better birth.
How popular is HypnoBirthing/what is the demand for HypnoBirthing?
HypnoBirthing is now growing quite rapidly in the UK, thanks to exposure in both local and national media, not least of which was the feature on Richard and Judy.
We believe that this will continue to increase, and the more therapists there are practicing HypnoBirthing, and the more it becomes known, the more popular it will become.
Demand varies from area to area. As with many of these things, London and the South East probably see slightly more demand than other areas at the moment, but we get enquiries every day from all corners of the UK.
That said, the best way to increase demand in your area, as outlined above, is to go out and create it.
