I have the name of a hypnobirthing/hypnotherpist practitioner and wondered if this type of therapy would help with my fear of birth? Its quite expensive so I want to find out before I try it.
thanks

Dear Moira,
Yes absolutely it would! in fact it's possibly the most perfect thing for you!!
I have taught lots of women now who have been scared of birth, some even with a diagnosed phobia of birth who have scheduled in C-Sections months in advance because of their fear, they have all gone on to have wonderful natural births.
Why don't you phone your local HypnoBirthing practitioner (this would be better than just a regular hypnotherapist) and have a chat with them.
If you read this month's current Mother and Baby magazine there is a great article about how a lady overcame her fear of birth after taking a HypnoBirthing course with Mia, one of our practitioners.
You could also read this great article about birth phobia too, the lady in question was so profoundly moved by her experience that she trained to become a HypnoBirthing teacher:

Thanks for your reply.
I have had a bad cold for 3 months and so havent been well enough to deal with things. Ive only got 2 months until the birth.
I mentioned hypnobirthing to my midwife and she said you have to practice a lot but didnt know much about it. Then time is rushed with a midwife and Ive got to make a decision soon about whether I want a c-section as midwife said she thinks a normal birth will be too traumatising. I have booked an epidural but then she revealed that if there are not enough midwives on duty then I cant have one. This has left me very anxious and frightened. I had traumatic first birth.
The hypnotherapist Ive found is a qualified hypnobirther as well. I just dont know how many sessions I will need and if I have time. She is registered with MNIH or something like that.

I have no idea what the MNIH is, just make sure she is listed here:
http://www.hypnobirthing.co.uk/hypnobir ... sses.shtmlIf she is not on that list then she doesn't teach HypnoBirthing (TM). The course is 12.5hrs long and is usually split into 4 o 5 sessions.
Your midwife sounds as much use as a chocolate teapot!
Give the HypnoBirthing practitioner a ring, I'm sure she'll put your mind at rest.
Sarah

Some suggestions Moira, from midwife/HB practitioner - you may not like them, but HB can help you make these changes.......
Deal with the negative things you stated:-
Get in touch with HB practitioner asap and explain how you want to feel - not how you feel right now - cos that "how you feel right now feeling" is never gonna change. But you have made a huge step in entering this forum, so now, go for it!
Make the 2 months you have left the most positive 2 months of your life - they are 2 more than if you only had 3 days left!
As soon as you decide for yourself what's needed here, your general health stands a chance of improving - banish that lingering cold.
It's hard to put a price on positive improvement, but discuss this with your practitioner - we all try and accomodate what people can truly afford. Barter.
Make appt to meet with your local supervisor of midwives or Head of Midwifery to secure the kind of care you really need - if they don't hear from you, they don't know you're there. Don't let hosp/Drs/midwives decide for you - learn how to decide for yourself.
A HB course can take you through all the steps needed to understand why you feel so overwhelmed with this, how and why to change it, how to get what you want within safety of birth, how to encompass a birth partner usefully and lots of practical breathing/massage/birth plan tips for success - whilst all the time reducing the fear. What have you to lose, if all you can look forward to at the moment is a lousy birth event?
Wish you all the best,
Bernie.

Ha. Ha. thats about right!
Thanks for your responses. I do believe this chest infection has hung around cos of the stress Ive been under. My immune system must be weak.
I think there are a few hypnobirthers in Lincoln. Are you allowed to recommend one or PM me a good one. I am hoping that it will help me relax and Ive also been in touch with the birth trauma association as i had traumatic time with first pregnancy/birth.
Thanks for your help and am seeing midwife today.

I think Sophie Fletcher teaches in Lincoln - here's her site:
http://www.mindfulmamma.co.uk/I haven't checked the practitione listing so I don't know of others in your area I'm afraid, but they will be on the other link I gave you.
You could always ask for another midwife you know

Hi Moira,
I've just picked up the post and see that you live in Lincoln. HypnoBirthing will definitely put your mind at rest. The woman in the Mother and Baby article this month was also called Moira and was one of Mia's clients. She was absolutely terrified and had a wonderful hypnobirth at home. Mia and I work closely together, I live in Barrowby just outside Grantham and we do run classes locally in Lincolnshire.
Some of the midwives at the hospital have been on the study days we run and I've heard have been singing HypnoBirthing's praises! So you would get good support from the hospital.
Why don't you give either Mia or myself a call on 0845 5082539 just to talk things through to and ask any questions that you may have in terms of classes, timescales, practise etc. Our details are on
www.mindfulmamma.co.ukI'm a hypnotherapist as well and echo Sarah's sentiments, HypnoBirthing is completely different to how a lot of hypnotherapists treat birth preparation. A lot that I know of use hypnosis as a plaster to mask the pain, while HypnoBirthing gets the root of why you don't need to feel pain.
Wishing you well,
Sophie

thanks for your replies.
Ive not been well. Still got chest infection and urine infection thats made me feel really sick along with the heartburn.
I feel so anxious that I feel a class situation would be too much. the midwife even thought the ante natal classes would make me too anxious cos they would be talking about the birth in a roomful of people and I wouldnt want them to see me so frightened.
I am thinking 1-1 sessions. I know that would be more expensive and I dont know how many I would need.

To do the course privately you would still need to do the same number of sessions, I find that if I teach it individually to couples we go through the stuff quicker, but still offer the same time if that makes sense...

Basically I dont feel fit enough to do 10 sessions. I havent got much time being nearly 33 weeks. Also I am not in a good frame of mind. Ive had lots of traumatic things this birth which i think has affected my physical health.Someone said you have to be open for the hypnobirthing to work and I feel very weak at the moment.
I do not want to go through a natural birth. It will be either an epidural or another c-section. But I would quite like a few private hypnotherapy sessions to help me relax and maybe discuss previous trauma in birth.
Someone said that if you have a chest infection that you cant have hypnotherapy.
I havent heard back from lady hypno that I contacted but I think it would be hard to get there, and someone e-mailed a natural health centre that is easy to get to and it says Sophie Fletcher works there.
If Sophie Fletcher would like to PM me with her details and fees and if any sessions would help me I would be grateful.

Moira a HypnoBirthing course is five sessions not ten and if you decide to take it you have plenty of time to complete the course. I have taught a lady starting at 36 weeks + and she had a good birth experience. Also Sophie put a phone number in her post on this thread, so maybe you could call her and discuss this.
Wishing you well whatever you decide xxxxx
