Has everyone heard about the Albany Midwives?

Hi all,
Just thought i'd post this, in case people aren't aware.

Attitudes and politics are changing and they directly or indirectly affect every
woman and subsequently her family.

The state of play in London with Kings College Hosp terminating this contract
for independent group midifery practise, has connotations for all of us.

If you are interested, please visit www.savethealbany.org.uk and in particular
the article section where all is revealed, and the option to place your petition
against Kings' action.

Also, if you visit www.cmace.org.uk (centre for maternal and child enquiries)you
will find their statement about the report they filed to Kings. Apparently there
were recommendations made in the report which Kings have failed to make public,
but they chose to close the contract rather than negotiate better services and
good contract management.

Also you can request the CMACE report from Kings by e-mail.

The country is watching this one - impression being created that all homebirth
is unsafe and that independent midwives would be better working for their local
Trusts (which is what Kings have offered the Albany midwives, yet they've
criticised their caseload practise in other ways).

So it seems that what happens at Kings/Albany could ricochet across the UK and
affect the stance that all other acute Trusts take in relation to
childbirth....this could leave midwifery in a worse place than it already is,
and women back to having very little option to place their choices.

Thanks everyone - do we need to support them?
Over to you,
Bernie UK - HB practitioner/midwife.
