Setting Up Hypnobirthing Sessions after the Training

Postby Jai Gallen » Tue Aug 22, 2006 8:26 am

Hello

I am attending the next Hypnobirthing training in Northampton. My husband and I have recently started our own business as Registered NLP practitioners, Certified hypnotherapists and Timeline therapists. My husband is also a Midwife and I am a registered Nurse.

We are really keen to add Hypnobirthing classes to our business, my husband has got an obvious interest and I have always been very interested in Natural Childbirth. I was privileged to see my sister being born (I was 18 at the time) in a homebirth when you really had to push for one. We have not had our children yet but would both want as natural and relaxed experience as possible.

My question is about the practicalities of setting up Hypnobirthing classes. Assuming that I pass the assessments/ assignments how soon after the course will I be able to run a the Hpnobirthing sessions?

Also what course material is generally given to the mothers and their birthing partners - if this has to be ordered from anywhere special (I noticed that the Hypnobirthing book is on Amazon) how much does it cost and how long does it take to arrive?

The reason I am asking these questions is that we need to think ahead to booking rooms and knowing the time frame involved following the course is obviously crucial.

I think I remember seeing that the course covers promotion/advertising and so on but if anyone has got good tips from experience re this I would be really grateful.

Hi Jai,

If I remember correctly you are allowed to teach one (maybe two?) couples whilst waiting for your certification. It tends to take Mickey around 2months to mark your paper and send you your certificate back, so it depends when you send off the paper to her. Earliest I would say would be January, more realistically Feb/Mar if you are adding in marketing etc (it does take a while for word to get out and to get networking and making good local contacts - in the childbirth world, not hypnotherapy). I trained in November and didn't get really busy until the following June.

You have to order books and CDs from the States (not Amazon) in my experience these take anywhere from 4-8wks to arrive, also there are other DVDs you will need to order which take around 4wks to arrive (not from the HB Institute). I also hand out another CD which takes around 4-8wks to arrive (seperate source) but it's not compulsory.

I would also take some time to make sure you're really up to scratch about childbirth too, read lots of books, try and get on a couple of study days etc....the course now covers childbirth basics but personally I feel you will need more info so maybe do that now. Read anything by Michel Odent, Ina May Gaskin, Grantly Dick Read, Sheila Kitzinger, Janet Balaskas, Frederick Leboyer and Nicky Wesson.

Thank you very much for the reply, I must admit I'm a little dismayed as to the time frame involved in setting up the classes but am still really looking forward to the course.

Thanks for the advice and the reading recommendations, I will certainly look these up. I am lucky because I have a midwife on hand if I have any questions. He will also be taking the sessions with me, we felt it would be a really good combination to have a hypnobirther and a midwife to answer the questions people will ask. He will probably also do the course at some point.

Thanks again for all your help
