I am 36 weeks pregnant but have just been told I have a shortage in amniotic fluid. Having been looking forward to a home birth with hypnobirthing I now face the liklihood of being induced.
Has anyone any suggestions of how to apply my techniques to this?
As being induced seems to go against all my understanding of a natural birth?
I will try to avoid the induction with non-invasive monitoring (baby was happy and well yesterday) but want to prepare myself as well as poss to avoid need for epidural.
Any success stories?

With my first baby I was induced at 40 weeks, cause of a lack of fluid, I had also planned a home birth. They wanted to induce me at 37 weeks but I just refused cause my partner was away in Iraq! It was a lot harder than a natural birth (I know cause I have since had a natural home birth which was so beautiful), I just used gas and air, I was induced using synotocin (I think) on a drip, the surges were really strong. Practice being able to get relaxed very quickly using facial relaxation, progressive relaxation or disappearing letters. When they tried breaking my membranes to start labour there was loads of water and the midwife was confused as to why they said there was a lack of fluid, it turned out he was just a bit big, 8lb 10 at 40 weeks, my home birth baby was 9 lb 4 (with no gas and air or anything).
Hope this helps

| i think you answered your're own question : to delay the induction as longas possible. if you read about oligohydramnios , the info is quite vague , so you want to be sure induction is the right way to move forward. i think some more negotiating with youre hosp team, and continue all youre relaxation techniques would be brilliant .eleanor |

The key is to make sure that the induction is *really* needed. I have had a very positive induction with hypnosis myself (due to pre-eclampsia) and so have a couple of my clients. Obviously it is very different to "natural" labour but it's still possible to have a positive induced birth.
Is your fluid "low" but still within normal limits? have you had scans by a couple of different sonographers over time? how do your hospital's normal limits compare to other hospitals? Remember the BRAINS (what are the benefits, risks, alternatives, how do you feel instinctively, what happens if we do nothing and say it with a smile) acronym to help you make a good decision. Also check your Bishop's Score before the induction and perhaps, if it is not a medical emergency, plan how and when you will be induced around that.
Good luck!

| If you do have to be induced, you need to focus on a very deep relaxation from when the hormone is started. I have seen many women using hypnoBirthing sucessfully when being induced and have found the best advice is to go into it knowing that you will need to use your deepening techniques sooner rather than later. |

You could also try acupuncture before they induce you to try and bring it on naturally.

just want to thank you all for your advice and support, what a wonderful network. Don't stop!
I plan to use all the advice, delaying tactics, my acupuncturist was helpful too saying"If they can give you 5 good reasons to be induced, go for it!"
It all gives me confidence to go with my gut feeling, that I feel fine, baby seems fine and I don't think it's ready to meet the world yet.
I'll definitely try acupuncture before anything else but it's all really helpful in allowing me to prepare for this event, with this potential change of plan.
So I'd better get off and practice these deepening techniques.
Thanks again
