Well we did it. You know what they say about the proof of the pudding is in the eating! A true test for me on hypnobirthing was our 3rd child and we had our baby girl on Friday night!

Practicing all I had learned in the course and applying to our new baby was just the confidance boost I think we needed, and we certainly worked through any queries we might have had as a HypnoBirthing couple.

At about 7.40ish we felt is though the surges were about 4.5 to 5 minutes apart and lasting about 45-60 seconds, so decided to call the hospital to pop in for a checkup. At about 8.15ish my wife was checked and they decided that she was about 5cm dilated. We guessed we had better stay then !

The midwifes at our local Birthing Centre were abosolutley fantastic and very keen on the concepts of hypnobirthing and I was so impressed that they were trying to remember all the correct wording, who could ask for more really!

We decided on a waterbirth for this baby, we wanted one on our second birth but the consultant at the time recommended that my wife came out of the water at the end because she had torn on the first baby. We wished we had known what we know now at the time. Mind you the same consultant had said on our second baby that he recommended a cassarian almost as soon as we had walked in the door. Luckily we listened to the midwifes at that point.

So my wife got in the bath , I had my prompt cards I had laminated ( ! ) and we were ready. Our beautiful baby girl was born at 11.31 pm , weighing 8lb 6 . To say the midwifes were impressed is an understatement, they commented that they werent needed at all and that we made a fantastic team. That made me feel so pleased being a dad and feeling left out on other births (and no hand inprints this time ! ).

When the baby was born she swam underneath my wife and went straight to her skin, a very happy baby. One thing that amazed me (I am always amazed ! ) was how much more perky and alert my wife was after the birth. She was chatting and laughing straight away, her skin was bright and didnt look tired at all, a sharp contrast to our other two births, where, to put it as polite as possible, she was knackered and tired and really not with it. It was lovely to see. A lady outside was waiting to ge her childs tongue tie sorted by our midwife and mentioned to my wife afterwards that when she heard laughing and chatting coming from the room she thought she had ages to wait, not realising thebaby had just been born !

No gas , no air, no chemicals, no nothing was needed. Just our love our breathing techniques and prompts.

She was more than happy to delvier the placenta naturally as well and got up on all fours on the bed, happily chatting to the midwife, so much chatting in fact that the midwife missed the placeta coming out and it took her by surprise. I think the words my wife said was ' There you go, do you want it ! ".

Its now Sunday and she is still high on the birth and so happy. The midwifes are asking for leaflets and are certainly recommending it. There was a bit of excitement amongst the midwifes before we came in as they had obviously been talking about the hypnobirth. I think they were pleased. I had a video tape for the before bit and after (no didnt tape the birth,, I was there for her not the tape !). and caught a lovely part of the midwife commenting that it was one of the most lovely calm and relaxed births she had ever been at.

Just thought you would all like to know our little (or big from the above!) story from a proud parent !

Congratulations Rik. That's a fantastic story and I'm delighted you and your wife had such a fabulous experience!

Like you say - the proof of the pudding is in the eating...and nothing better for boosting your confidence in teaching HypnoBirthing than the deep and personal thrill of having used it yourself successfully.

Well done!

Best regards
Gordon

Nice going, all of you!
Rick, I notice you are not too far away from myself in Hungerford, Berks. I run a Hypnotherapy supervision group - we meet about every 2 months. 3 of us are HB practitioners, all are hypnotherapists. Would you be interested in joining us the next meeting (when things settle down!).
Let me know - and anyone else out there who is interested and not too far to travel here.
With regards, Tara Economakis
