Hi, I'm new here and not pregnant (yet!) but I am interested in peoples experiences of hypnoBirthing second time around.

I have a 9 month old son and I found the birth so unbelievably painful that I honestly wanted to die rather than continue. I ended up having an epidural which was fab although not what I planned (water birth at home!). However just before they put the epidural in my spine they put a catheter (sp?!) in my back too and I thought that was the epidural. At that point I felt absolutely relaxed and in no pain whatsoever. Embarrassingly I said as much to the nurses who all just laughed! This makes me wonder that if I was relaxed then I would have had less pain?

Anyway, DH and I are planning to start trying for no.2 next month or so. And this time I would prefer not to have an epidural as I would like to go home as soon after the birth as possible to be with DS. I was wondering whether there are any second time around mums who can offer me advice on hypnobirthing. I am worried that now I know how awful and hard I found labour that it won't work for me.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts,

Nicki

Hi Nikki, a lady in my group is a second time Mum. She's due mid Feb so I'll let you know how she gets on. I can truly say that I didn't feel pain except during the transitional phase when I went from 2 cms to 9cms in 2 hours but I'm sure that discomfort was due to the fact that my partner wouldn 't phone the midwife because she'd just left the house! As soon as the midwife was contacted and I knew she was on her way I relaxed and the rest was easy. Good luck. Very Happy

the hypnobirthing course will absolutely dispell all youre fears around repeating youre 1st experience , and give you knowledge about the physiology of labour so you have choices with future births . as a midwife and hb practitioner i speak from knowledge on this topic ! if you wish for a home birth read nicky wessons book and get informed , then do the course so you have the tools to direct the way youre labour and birth goes. only by taking action and being proactive will you ensure you definitely have a different birth in the future , it can only get better ! i have seen this happen regularly with second time mums and they are delighted with themselves as are their partners. its great you are researching all this now , before you concieve so well done , youre desire for a better birth will ensure it becomes reality . eleanor copp

Hi Nicki!

I had an unpleasant birth with my son (now 2.5!) i got pregnant again 9 months later and remembered when i stayed calm and breathed deeply i felt great! i looked into hypnobirthing and used it with 8 weeks to go. Unfortunately i had complications with my daughters birth however unlike my son's birth when i had pethidine and gas and air and asked for more drugs - this time i was completely calm, relaxed and honestly didn't feel pain just strong, strong, tightenings. It is truly amazing and has inspired me to become a practitioner myself to help other mums experience the same!

I hope your next pregnancy and birth is a good one!!!! Very Happy

Hi Nikki,
I had a not very pleasant experience first time round and it took a long time of saying "never again" before I got pregnant again. We did the course and went on to have a fabulous birth, you are right, if you are relaxed it will be so much easier for you, that is half the battle.
I am now in training as a practioner as I believe it so much
Happy birthing!

Wow, thanks for your replies. I think I definitely will give it a go. Although I suppose first I get the fun part of getting that next baby! Wink

I will keep browsing the forum in the meantime as it really is inspirational hearing your stories. I especially enjoy ones from women who have had a bad birth previously - then I know that your not just one of these lucky people who are naturally good at giving birth and have a super high pain threshold!
