Strep B and Homebirths in Shropshire

Postby Emma-Kate Lanyon » Sat Sep 05, 2009 9:16 am

I wonder if you can help or advise me. I am currently pregnant with my second child at 30 weeks. As with my first birth, I am following the Mongan Hypnobirth method and my first choice was for either a home birth or delivery at the Midwife-led unit at Oswestry.

Unfortunately, my first urine sample at 12 weeks was positive for Group B strep. and therefore, I have been advised to have IV antibiotics and to give birth at the Shrewsbury hospital. A four-hour plus stay during labour at the large and busy hospital in Shrewsbury is not an option I want to take unless absolutely unavoidable.

I have requested a second vaginal and rectal swab at 36 weeks but have been told that regardless of a negative result I would still be advised to have antibiotics and if I declined would be strongly advised to spend time at Shrewsbury for my baby to be monitored and have a blood test. I have spoken to my GP but he is unable to attend a home birth to administer the antibiotics. I have also failed so far to find a way to get the antibiotics administered privately. Has anyone out there come across similar scenario or had athe same expereince where a mother has managed to have IV antibiotics for a home birth.

Thanks for your help in this matter,

hello Emma - Kate ,
It is possible to have intra muscular anti biotics , and one of my couples got these prescribed by the consultant so she could still have her home birth .it is definitely something to persue .
Have you looked at the gbs website and got savvy on what the difficulties are with it ?
to remain calm and have peace of mind will take a bit of navigation , and once you have got all the available info you can make your choice based around what is safest for you both .
remember the bit about being flexible , and you will feel confident in what you do decide ,
