Any Dads, or Dads-to-be, out there?

Postby Breathingsince » Sat Aug 27, 2011 8:02 pm

Hi all

I'm James and my awesome wife and I are expecting bambino number 2 in 8 weeks time. We're currently 3 sessions into a 5 session Hypnobirthing course and I'm so glad we're doing it: I can't believe this ISN'T standard practises for childbirth..

Thought I would register and post here though as, somewhat typically, there doesn't seem to be much going on out in the social web for Dads training for a hypnobirth. Sigh. I know us blokes aren't supposed to like talking about our feelings and the like, but, seeing as one of the main things about hypnobirthing (from what I'm learning) is how important the role of your partner is, i guess I was hoping to find some stuff out there...

So I thought I'd start a post and hope that maybe a few of you Mums out there could cajole your fellas into jumping online. The main thing that 'scares' me about the birth is that I'll muck something up and, as a result, knock Lucy (my wife), out of her zone and thus impact on the experience.

We had a horrendous experience with the birth of our first daughter, Matilda. 57 hours, finally induced, retained placenta, the list goes on. And don't even get me started on some of the hospital staff... Poor Tils had a rather traumatic entrance to this crazy world! So, we were determined to save up and do the hypnobirthing course this time and are planning a water birth at home in October.

Would love to hear any advice/stories from fellow Dads about being birth partners - tips of things to do and not to do. I've got the main Marie Mongan book, which I'm about to start, but thought personal stories might help. Oh, and I thought I'd share my experience - as there doesn't seem to be many Dads out there who do.

Hope to hear from some fellow Dads soon. In the mean time, hope everyone has a fab bank holiday - despite the weather forecast!

Hi James

By my calculations this reply is probably a bit on the late side but I wanted to say thank you for taking an interest and getting out there. You are right, there is very little for dads out there. The father's handbook for homebirth is filled with stories for dads by dads and a good read.

Do pop back and let us know how you get on.

Take care and happy birthing,
Soshanna
