Karen's birth story

Postby Lee McCormack » Fri Jul 27, 2007 8:01 am

This is my client Karen's birth story ......

My waters broke on 27th June - Wednesday and the hospital asked us to come back
on Saturday for induction if labour had not started.

Early labour started in the early hours of Saturday morning - I was relieved!!

However we still had to go to the hospital but I was not induced at
all and continued the early stages in hospital instead of at home, not
ideal but okay.
Used birthing ball, relaxation techniques and breathing - the
breathing is invaluable!
Walked, did camel rolls surges were every 7 minutes at that
stage but never picked up. Used my breathing and relaxation techniques
and Phil helped me relax
By 11pm on Saturday night my surges had really slowed down. Phil
went home and I tried to get some rest, surges started, rested
and used hypnobirthing c.d and techniques, surges picked up to
every 4-5 minutes by about 4am
Phil came back and it was all looking good
Got into established labour about 6am and then discovered Jasmine was
getting distressed and had released her bowels. Once I knew this I
became distressed. She had changed positions, and was now sideways on.
At this point I could no longer get comfortable lying down
Went down to delivery suite, had gas and air - god that stuffs good!
I was about 5cm dilated by this stage with some way to go so the midwife
recommended I took pethidine and rested a little ( I been awake now
for 24hours at least) and continue to dilate and then the pethidine
would wear off in time to breath that baby down

We got on a foetal monitor and Jasmine's heartbeat was dropping below
100, my cervix was not dilating, from there it was a bit of a blur, I was
rushed for an emergency cesarean and Phil could not come with me

I had a general anaesthetic, so neither of us saw her being born - my
only real disappointment
When I woke up she was with daddy, perfect and perfectly content.
No complications of any kind.
Not what I expected but it is what I got - she wasn't going to make it
on her own. My advice would be - expect the unexpected and accept it
with good grace. Be informed about all eventualities. The most
important thing is your mental attitude - this is the one thing you
choose yourself
