Your HB teacher should give you a birth companions prompt sheet which should suggest some and it says at what point to use them, but I always tell couples if any of really stand out, either you really like them or dislike them highlight or black out as approprite. Whenever the birth companion use them is the right time-its always the right time, if the mum doesn't want the birth companion she will tell the birth companion to shut up, but it seems to be really hard for the mum to tell the birth companion to start saying them and I hate it when mums get back to me and say they wished their birth companion had said more, when I ask the birth companion why they didn't say anything its always 'I didn't know if it ws the right time' or 'I felt silly', so I tell birth companions in class not to feel silly, the midwife won't be bothered about what they are saying, its always the right time etc . I also tell the birth companion to practice saying them to the mum while she is relaxing at home, then the birth companion won't feel silly saying them during the birthing and it will help the mum to relax more during the birthing because she will of heard them at home while she was relxed and it will remind her subconcious mind of that. If there are any affirmations you like but aren't on the prompt sheet that you like, then add them.
