What should my first hypnobirthing session contained

Postby mamabear » Tue Aug 30, 2011 8:15 am

Hello!

Im really hoping that I can receive some guidance about what type of service I should have received/ experienced in my first hypnobirthing session

My husband and I are expecting our first baby in November and after much research belived Hypnobirthing was exactly how wae were hoping to bring our baby into the world.

We attended our first session last week and were shocked and disappointed with the service we received and I just wanted to know what structure (as loose and rough as it might be) the first session normally takes?

A brief summary of ours was we sat in the practioners living room while she read outloud from a series of photocopies which were mostly pages from the book, she did not offer any depth of teaching or a more personal style of teaching simply reading aloud, well mumbling through, and making serveral mistakes and leaving bits out. We did not do very much practical work which I guessed alot of the session would be theory but we did barely 15 minutes? In this time as she read through her script she would make mistakes, apologise, back track and then start again which was more than disturbing when you are tryin to relax to the words and sounds of someones voice.

We have been left feeling very deflated and sad that hypnobirthing does not seem to be what we expected and having attended hypno therapy for several things and read the hypnobirthing book cover to cover i thought i knew and was informed what to expect.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly received

Kindest Regards

Hi there,
I'm really sorry to hear this. The first session should be exciting, eye-opening, and leave you feeling even more convinced that hypnobirthing is for you, than you did before you started. I've been teaching for 6 years, and regularly get that reaction - and I post people the book before they come, so they already know a lot of it! It is largely theory in the first week, but you should come away convinced that this is the best way to have your baby, excited about natural birth, with a clear idea of what you need to do next, and looking forward to having your baby. I'm guessing this is a new practitioner (though that is no excuse). in answer to your question, it sounds like she may have covered what she needs to cover - but she has done it very badly. In an ideal world, I would explain to her that you are struggling, give her some feedback, and then go and find some-one else. (Don't give up on hypnobirthing. It really is fantastic). The birth of your baby is too important to worry about offending people. She ought to be teaching you that you carefully select those people around you who inspire you, and ignore those who don't  Good luck - i wouldn't like to be in your shoes. Enjoy your pregnancy! :D
