What is a good way to sum up for midwife etc?

Postby AliR1980 » Tue Sep 16, 2008 2:32 pm

I am fully committed to Hypnobirthing, am fully engrossed in the book and am looking forward to my sessions starting in November.

I am looking for advice from others on how to present hypnobirthing to my midwife, friends, consultant etc. As soon as you mention 'hypno' or hypnotherapy I think people raise an eyebrow. So far I've just mentioned casually to my midwife that I was looking into a course which taught breathing, deep relaxation techniques and visualisations to manage labour. Anyone else had any positive experiences of telling others about hypnobirthing?

Any advice appreciated.

I'd be very surprised if they hadn't heard of it to be honest, if not I think your description sounds good! and you could always give them the URL of this website!

Actually though I have to say I advise my mums not to get into conversations about HypnoBirthing, bad for my business, but great for them as it means they have no negativity and people scoffing and then telling them "yeah, I thought that when I was pregnant - then I had ALL the drugs when the pain really hit" .

I was worried about mentioning it to my MW but I did and she said that one of 'her girls' lol had just had a hypnobirth and it was brilliant. I think most MWs are open to new ideas but I was told to keep an open mind about pain relief 'just in case'.

ockysmith- I know what you mean, I haven't mentioned it to many people as you get some proper negative reactions  I don't know why people are so willing to just accept childbirth as this horrific painful experience- especially men!

Afterwards I'll tell everyone, I love saying I told you so

I cautiously asked my MW had she heard anything about HB. Turned out she was about to have her second baby using HB and was delighted to talk about it (she is not able to recommend it as an NHS person) she couldn't be at my birth, too busy with her own  But the lovely MW who was there, unknown to me was in early pregnancy and also preparing for her own HB. There is a lot of it about!

I recently did practitioner training and the course was packed with MW totally knocked out (in a good way)by the HB mums they'd attended.

Generally I found it better not to get into big HB discussions with friends, although people were curious and supportive I felt a bit under the spotlight while I was pregnant - after the birth I couldn't wait for people to ask :D

Does having a "just in case" thought in the back of your mind not hinder the full belief that the Hypnobirthing method will work?
