Hi, I am a practioner. The main thing with surge breathing is that each breath in, is as long as each breath out so its basically a calm flow of breath. Breathing should remain comfortable at all times. Try and breathe into your stomach with each inhalation to maximise the surges and maybe add a nice visualisation - a beach maybe with the waves just gently flowing in (in breath) and out (out breath). Are you feeling any practice surges? If so, you could maybe practice with those? The idea of the rapid count to 20 is to give you an idea of how long your breaths should be but with reduced lung capacity etc its very difficult to do! HTH? Ellena

Hi - I too am a practitioner. I agree with what has been said but would add that some of my mums find that counting (to whatever number is comfortable for you - not easy to count to a high number if your baby is still 'high') helps them focus, others find that they are focusing on it to the detriment of their relaxation and trying too hard to hit the number they feel that they 'should' be reaching. If this is the case with you, then I suggest that you try just using as long and deep a breath as is comfortable for you, along with your visualisation once your surges actually begin See which works best for you.
Hope you have a lovely calm, positive birthing experience

Hi
So good to hear you saying that you are excited about the arrival of your baby -
As for the birth breathing - different to the slow/sleep (calm/surge) breathing. Good but quick breath in - then a long slow breath out - directing this down to your baby and beyond down the birth canal in a sort of a 'j' shape. Whilst you are doing this, use your visualisation - a lovely flower opening, or something similar - use your favourite flower/s. As soon as you run out of breath, another breath in and repeat. You may need up to three birth breaths for each surge - use each second of each surge by doing your breathing. During this, the rest of your body remains relaxed, so that your uterus and baby are well oxygenated to assist the birthing as much as possible. Some mums choose to bear down at this time - this is NOT the same as pushing - rather focusing on the muscles at the top of your uterus and gently squeezing them to help to move the baby down. As I said, different from pushing which would mean a tightening rather than relaxing of the birth path. Many midwives will be saying 'push' at this point as it is what they have always said - but you just continue with your breathing. Good idea to ask (in your birth preferences) if the midwife would use breathe rather than push - but as I said, just relax through and you will be able to cut 'push' out of your mind. Listen to what your body and your baby are telling you to do. You can do it!

Hi,

I tried the breathing with the waves............... so so so much easier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am totally a different person.....
Took me at least 3months to come round to the idea of trying for a baby..... I was too Petrified of the birth....
When I found out I was pregnant...... it was a mixure of excitment and pour fear and would find myself just crying.

Now I am totally different and really looking to it.........
I watched one born every mintue last night and even more re-enforce my thoughts...... if you didn't see.............One birth was a pool birth... the girl was very very calm and relax...... perfect amazing birth..... the other lady.... panicing, scared etc....... terrible birth.....

I have just completed me birth plan.... may as well add it on here for you all to have a look at...
see what you think.... this is just an overview and I have a more in depth one.......

Our Birth Plan Over view.
If possible here is how we would like our birth plan.

We would like the most natural birth as possible without intervention.
If any special circumstance occurs we would like to feel under no pressure to change our options.

I would like to use a birthing ball and if available the birthing pool. If any other equipment is available I would be interested in using to keep active.

I would like to use relaxation techniques during my labour so a nice quite room would be wonderful with fewer interruptions as possible.
As I will be practising relaxation and meditation, if any questions need to be asked and my husband can answer them, we would be grateful if I am not disbursed.

As labour advances and the “pushing stage” has arrived.
I would like a nice calm relaxed atmosphere and to be able to breath my baby down and not be pressured into pushing.

Again if all is going well we would like our baby not to be pulled from me.
If possible at all I would love my husband to help receive our baby.
Obviously we still would like the midwife to be in full control.

We would like our baby to be placed on to me and my husband to announce the sex.
The cord we would like to left attached until blood has stopped pumping back into the baby and then my husband cut the cord.

I will then be happy to have the injection to help birth the placenta after the cord has been cut.

We would then like to have time with our little one before weights and measurement etc, Need to be taken.

Obviously we understand things do happen and change might be needed.
This is just how we would love to have our baby born.

Thanks for you help with everything!!!!!

Good to hear you sounding so positive. Be proud of how you have turned your feelings about birth around - well done.

Keep up with the practise for your relaxation and breathing - and then let me know how things go - will be thinking of you. Enjoy your little one when s/he arrives.
