Third time pregnancy...am I too late to try this??

Postby rollonnumber3 » Thu Nov 06, 2008 11:03 am

Hi All
I am nearly 26 weeks pregnant with my third child. I have had two large babies - my daughter was first weighing 9lb 8 and my son weighed 11lb 5.
I am not expecting a 7lb baby this time, and I know it's a boy so I am guessing he will be 9/10lbs. I am watching my weight and so far I have only put on 12lbs which I am really pleased with.
I have a friend who tried hypnobirthing with her daughter, she had a home birth and said it was fabulous.
I am keen to have this baby naturally. I had very long labours with both my daughter and son and had to have an epidural with my son as he was born by ventouse due to his size.
I managed to have my daughter naturally with gas and air but I am worried that as my sons birth ended up being quite traumatic that I may start to panic once i go into labour this third and final time!
Do you think that hypnobirthing could help me to relax and have a natural birth even with an expected big baby??

I think you are a perfect candidate for HypnoBirthing.

Firstly have a look at:

http://www.bigbaby.org.uk

re.birthing a large baby, there are many "large baby" HypnoBirthing homebirths on there (including my own - it's my site  ) if you read the whole site you'll realise that baby's size is pretty irrelavant when it comes to normal natural birth!

I didn't come to HypnoBirthing until Ihad my 3rd baby. With my first (10lb)admittedly I did listen to a hypnosis CD, he was born in hospital after transferring in from a planned homebirth. My 2nd baby (9lb 12oz) was born in hospital again (very traumatic induction) with him I went to see a hypnotherapist fo private sessions (not HypnoBirthing though). I had epidurals with both of them and they weren't nice experiences.

Finally with my 3rd baby I found HypnoBirthing and wow what a difference! He was born at home (11lb 3oz), in 4hrs, had no need for any pharmacological pain relief whatsoever, it was *wonderful*. I had another baby last year (11lb 1oz), again she was born at home, drug free in less than an hour. I cannot highlight the differences that 1) HypnoBirthing makes and 2) Homebirth maks.

So go for it! I never imagined that giving birth could be so enjoyable and so easy (and be warned it becomes incredibly addictive - we had planned on stopping at no.3   ).

Agreed, what a brilliant site! I'm always looking for evidence that show the big baby/more pain myth for what it is, and that one is going to come in handy.

A couple of years ago there was a news article about young pregnant women smoking to reduce the weight of their babies, and the quotes in response were:

"Childbirth is no less painful if your baby is low weight" (Caroline Flint, Health Minister)
"Teenagers are frightened and think if their baby is small, it won't be so painful, but it doesn't equate." (Catharine Parker-Littler, Director of midwivesonline.com)

I found them handy to give to certain couples, so maybe they'd be useful for your site.

Thanks both - spread the word! the more women who understand that the way "big babies" are medically managed is NOT based on evidence based practice the better!
