Slow breathing

Postby weaholt » Tue Jan 06, 2009 8:36 pm

Hi

I have finished my course, but I'm struggling with the slow breathing. I know that I'm supposed to breath in for 20 and out for 20, but I can't get anywhere near this at the moment. I was reaching about 12 for the in breath and 9 for the out breath, but this seems to have slipped for some reason. Even the balloon visualisation does not help me.

I'm starting to get concerned that this will make things difficult for me during labour - can nayone help?

Thanks

Hi,

I'd really recommend you get back in contact with your practitioner ASAP.

If you've done a course this isn't something you shoud need to be worrying about on your own, your pracitioner will be able to practice the breathing with you again, watch how you do it and help you to control your breathing. The number really doesn't matter very much, the fact that it is deep and in control (and relaxes you) does though, you don't sound like you really fit any of those at the moment - hence the recommendation to go back to your practitioner before you start to negatively condition breathing with stress!

Thanks for the response.

If the number does not matter then I am fine, I was concernd that the length of my in and out breaths would have a negative effect. I am able to keep my breathing slow and controlled and it does relax me. I was getting preoccupied with reaching the magoc 20!! I feel better now though.

Thanks again.

Hi there :) Like Ocky says the number count as you breathe is not as important as whether or not it is a deep and relaxing breath, or that the count in and out is the same so that the breaths are regular. I've found that so far most of 'my' mums have compromised on the number count and that is fine........20 can be quite difficult with a baby up under your ribs - and as Ocky says you don't want to be associating breathing with stress  :)
