Hypnobirthing & antenatal classes

Postby lizzybeth111 » Thu Apr 29, 2010 6:24 pm

Hi all,
I'm after a bit of advice. I'm doing the HB course currently and have just been sent details of NHS funded antenatal classes I have been booked on. I have read in the HB book though that antenatal classes can often contradict learning from the HB course, with a much more medical angle on birth. I'm worried it might undo some of the good that the course has done in helping me to be less anxious about the birth. This is my first baby so any advice on whether I should steer clear of the NHS courses or would be losing out if I miss them would be really great!!
thanks all,
Liz x

its true that you will be exposed to a very different philosophy in the nhs classes , so be clear with yourself about why you are going and what you intend to get from them , and be aware that your understanding is already different from the other couples who hav'nt read the book and you will find that you are able to be quite discerning if you do choose to go .

Hi Liz,

I am actually facing the same decision. I am about to start my HB class next week and the NHS class should be over the weekend next week.
How have you decided? Are you going to go for the NHS class?

Thank you

I did both (actually didn't go to HypnoBirthing classes as I teach it) but went to the NHS classes, I found that they did give me some useful information, one intevention came up when they talked about interventions that the doctor said he wanted to do while I was birthing my baby, if I hadn't learnt about it I would of been in a major panic, but as I knew what it was from the NHS classes I felt able to ask him for more information (used the questioning intervention-from HypnoBirthing) asking is it really necessary at this moment, what are the benefits to the baby and he went away and no more was said, which for me was a positive result! If it had been necessary I would of allowed him to go ahead.

I also learnt a little about breastfeeding, I'd of liked more on how to care for the baby and less about pain-relief, but all classes are different. Go along and then just come back to the HypnoBirthing after it, making sure the HypnoBirthing is at the front of your mind.

Hope this helps.

Hello Danielle,

thank you for your reply. I thought that the NHS class could give me some useful info but wasn't sure. Now I feel I know what to do. Thank you.

Giving birth to a child is one of the most important things a woman does in her life.

However, the thought of labour is often one of the most daunting. Television births are usually portrayed as agonising and traumatic experiences and mothers love relaying stories of the relentless contractions that took over their bodies hour after hour. BUT, labour need not be like this. For more information visit this..

Hi,
I know this is too late for the original poster but for anyone else wondering about this - I'm going my antenatal classes at the moment and would recommend people to do them as well as the hypnobirthing. Our antenatal classes are broader and cover baby care and breast feeding techniques which is helpful, they also have a tour of the hospital and birthing centre which help me with visualisations and knowing where I'm going to go etc helps to stay relaxed about it since there are less unknowns. That said, some hospitals won't do the tours. The only thing I would suggest is to do the hypnobirthing course before the antenatal so you can choose what information to take on board and what to ignore.
Hope this helps - Esta
