How to have a home hypnobirth?

Postby kenashnic » Sat Nov 19, 2011 11:17 am

Id like to have a waterbirth at home and do hypnobirthing. But I live in north of Scotland and hardly anyone has ever heard or hypnobirthing or have homebirths. My midwfe hasnt even heard of it so Im worried the midwifes who come to my house wont let me have the birth I want. Im worried they will try and keep checking how dilated I am, make me force pushing instead of breathing the baby down and wont let me do any of the other calm techniques involved in hypnobirth. Is there anything I can say to the midwifes to make sure they leave me to birth naturally and slowly? I hate the look of how they rush birhting women in hospitals! Thank you x

Hello. I also live in the north of Scotland and have prepared for a home birth using the Hypnobirthing method. My midwife has done one before for a home birth and is very agreeable to it. I have actually just completed my last Hypnobirthing session about 1/2 hour ago. I am 38 weeks Monday so hoping something will happen next week. Fingers crossed.
I also hired my birth pool got delivered Monday and we are all ready to go :D

I live in the north east, Aberdeenshire. Where do you live? No one seems to know what hypnobirthing is around here, and my midwife has only seen one waterbirth! Im worried the midwives will rush me as they only know what theyve been taught in hospitals so by letting me do everything naturally with no medical intervention, unless absolutely necessery, it will go against what they have been taught and they will be worried and wonder why on earth im just sitting there meditating instead of screaming and pushing. I have learnt birth breathing so I will try to avoid pushing if necessary and just breath the baby down and out, and the midwives wont like that. Is this your first child / first waterbirth?

Yeh. First for everything. I live in Inverness. I am very lucky that my Hypnobirthing teacher used to be a midwife and that although the Nhs don't fund Hypnobirthing all the midwives in inverness have been given the books and material to learn to support those opting for a Hypnobirthing experience. I'm sure that's still not to say that they won't use the wrong language or be tempted to follow their normal path on occasions. That's up to me and hubby most importantly to stay strong. I adapted and handed out copies of my Hypnobirthing birth plan to all the midwives that will be on call for my birth. Get a copy of that from your practitioner it's very clear about your needs and expectations of your caregivers. I hope this helps. When is your birthing time?

Im due 15th of March, still a few months. I dont have a hypnobirthing practicioner as I had the classes for free from my sisters friend who was over from Australia, shes a hypnotherapist in Aussie and I cant get a hold of her as shes away travelling until April :( And all the notes that i had from the classes accidently got thrown out by my mum when re decorating my room as they were in a bag. Just my luck haha. Im sure I can type out something for the midwifes about what my birth plan will be and I have the Mongan method hypnobirthing book and theres a couple of pages in it somewhere that you can copy and print for your midwife about your hypnobirth, birth prefrences and a letter explaning it all. I see my midwife tomorrow so Ill mention Id like to give out my birth plan to the midwives. Thanks for the great idea I feel alot more positive :)

Hi

How did you get on with your Midwife appointment? Just remember that everything is your choice and should be made with informed consent, you do not HAVE to do anything. Preparing a a birth preference sheet and going over it in advance with the midwives will help. Let us know how you get on.

Happy birthing!

It went ok but midiwife just doesnt agree with hypnobirthing. And I forgot to ask about the dilation checking. I really dont want it checked, is it really necessary? I just want everything to happen naturally I dont like all these timescales etc. Its really going to put me off my hypnosis having my dilation checked and make me very uncomfortable. Do I have to have it checked? Is it dangerous not to? thanks!

Hi

Sorry for the delay, didn't get this reply for some reason :-)

With regards to your midwife not agreeing with HypnoBirthing, maybe you can be the one to show her how well it works? :-) If you are really uncomfortable with vaginal examinations you can refuse. However, many mums I have worked with say they can easily go into relaxation and stay there or go back even more deeply after a check, change in position/environment or other distraction. I would suggest focusing on how you remain calm and comfortable during your labour and any checks that you consent to. You can write yourself an affirmation and repeat it to yourself with conviction daily from now until your baby comes.

Happy birthing,
Soshanna
