Counting during relaxation

Postby minibaby » Wed Mar 09, 2011 1:22 pm

So I had a four hour lesson in hypnobirthing over the weekend. I haven't yet read the accompanying book, but I'm confused over the breating during sleep and slow breathing. I've been given the rainbow relaxation CD and was told to count to four when I inhale and 8 when I exhale. When i listen to the Rainbow Relaxation CD I've been counting the WHOLE time. Should I just get to know roghly the rhythm of the breathing and give up the counting to allow me to visualise, or continue to count?

Hi

The count in to 4 and count out to 8 is for sleep breathing. For the slow breathing you will need to practise breathing in and out for as long as possible.

After a while you will get to know how long you are breathing for, basically for the sleep breathing you need to breathe out for longer than when breathing in. Once you are ok about this you no longer have to count as it will be second nature to you. Its good visualise but basically just try and relax as much as you can.

Am no expert on this as i have just finished my course and still practising the breathing. I have 3 weeks to go and just cant wait to see my baby.

Hope all goes well for you, if in doubt contact your hynobirthing instructor, i am sure they will re-assure you.

Kind regards

Thank you for your help. I've noticed that the more I do it the more, as you say, it becomes natural and I end up not needing to count. Although there is something quite soothing about counting as it empties my brain of other thoughts like 'what's happenign at work' and 'what's for dinner?'

Appreciate your time to answer.
