Hi Kate,
The book you want to buy is by Marie Mongan (HypnoBirthing), you might also want to buy "Childbirth Without Fear" by Grantly Dick Read which is the inspiration for HypnoBirthing as it stands today you might say.
I cannot emphasise enough how important classes are though, it is possible to learn to a certain degree with books and CDs, but it's rather like learning to drive by only reading a manual and the highway code, to get the best effects you really do need classes with an expert practitioner who can help you and your birth partner with the techniques and lots of extras such as in class hypnosis.
I've tried both ways and whilst the self teaching stuff helped me have a calmer birth, I still needed an epidural and intervention, whereas the course led to wonderful calm, comfortable intervention free births (and a calm husband!).
You'll find a listing of local classes on this website, do get in contact with your local teacher, many run free information sessions and coffee mornings.
